Lean Business Optimisation in the Public Sector (Healthcare)

At Penn Engineered Solutions we have completed Lean Business Optimisations for non clinical work processes within the UK National Health Service. We utilised Value Stream Mapping and used elements of Six Sigma process methodologies looking for non value added waste and proposing alternate ways of working. We looked at visual management techniques and offered opportunities for improvement. Likewise we evaluated Standard Operating Procedures and suggested ways to ensure staff followed these and became engaged in owning their work area processes and procedures. The approach we used is transferable to many other business operations in both the public and private sector.

We used Penn Engineered Solutions to help us design a more efficient approach to processing patient correspondence, both paper and electronic. We were already scanning patient letters on arrival before distributing them electronically to GPs and Administrative staff. But Penn Engineered Solutions helped us understand that, by re-designing the flow of this administrative work around the practice we could create a seamless straight-through process with minimal hand overs and greater efficiency. In addition it has freed up our front line staff to concentrate on more patient facing activities. We have been implementing this process for some time now and it is working well.
