Data Centre Cabinet & Cabling installation

Public Sector Core Migration

A very large public sector client had a requirement to migrate their existing aging datacentre core networks to modern equivalents. The primary challenge was that these datacentres supported an estate of over 300,000 users, meaning that downtime was strictly limited. The work involved the supply, testing and installation of several hundred fibre and copper cables. The final pivotal element was the careful migration of live services to the new core platforms. Our consultants were tasked with the planning and execution of the entire migration. This ultimately involved multiple engineering teams working shift patterns and performing detailed handovers. Timing of each activity was crucial and every task was scheduled in painstaking detail, both to minimise risk but to ensure that the client was kept constantly appraised. The operation ran day and night over several days and was a complete success. All of the individuals involved were ultimately awarded commendations for their involvement.

Communications
"Each weekend of working was a feat in itself requiring clear and unambiguous understanding of the service impact, mitigation planning to minimise the service impact, meticulous technical planning of the enhancements – including contingency planning – and comprehensive execution plans. Concise and clear communications needed to be provided for the user community so they could understand the implications of the outages from an operational context and provide approval to proceed. Of course the delivery could not have been the success it was without the exemplary endeavours of the individual team members. As a result many of the key team members where routinely working beyond normal hours to support planning and preparation and also working full weekends to execute the plan".
