Sector and market opportunity

CAM Testbed UK is offering 6 world-leading facilities for the modelling, simulation, testing, development and deployment of connected and automated mobility solutions.

Growth prospects

The global market for CAM technologies will be £100 billion by 2035 and £6.4 billion in the UK.

CAM Testbed UK enables technologies to be developed, tested, and proven ready to deploy in global markets.

Location

CAM Testbed UK runs from London through Oxfordshire and into the Midlands. It offers investors access to an advanced, comprehensive, and coordinated CAM testing ecosystem, a world-class academic research community, a growing industry cluster and an impressive talent base.

Connectivity

The region hosts East Midlands and Birmingham International airports. The excellent road network connects you to London and the rest of the UK.

Rail connections to London are under 1 hour from some parts of the region. Links to the North of England will be transformed by High Speed 2 (HS2) – a new high-speed rail network.

The 5G roll-out in the area will also create more opportunities.

Local talent and skills

The region is home to Motorsport Valley, with 25,000 highly skilled engineers – the largest concentration of motorsport engineers in the world.

More than 35,000 local university students are taking industry relevant subjects. The MSc in connected and autonomous vehicles is offered by Cranfield, Coventry and Warwick universities.

Research and expertise

The region is home to some of Europe’s leading universities engaged in modelling and simulation.

Centres of excellence dedicated to developing CAM technologies include:

  • Centre for Connected and Autonomous Automotive Research (CCAAR) with HORIBA-MIRA and Coventry University
  • Warwick Manufacturing Group and Cranfield University’s Intelligent Mobility Engineering Centre (IMEC) and Multi-User Environment for Autonomous Vehicle Innovation (MUEAVI)

Enabling clean growth

The government’s ten point plan sets out the approach it will take to drive the UK’s path to net zero.

Accelerating the shift to zero emission vehicles and green public transport are 2 key aspects of the plan. CAM solutions will contribute to both, boosting energy efficiency of vehicles and reducing traffic congestion.

Local and national government support

The region has a well-funded R&D base with a joint UK government and industry commitment of £440 million into more than 90 projects. These involve more than 200 organisations working on self-driving and connected technologies.

Local government partners also give support with:

  • recruitment and training
  • access to finance
  • site selection
  • engagement with testbed facilities, universities and supply chain partners

Success stories

Eatron Technologies

Eatron Technologies is an intelligent software products and solutions company specialising in electric and autonomous vehicles.

The company set up in Warwick after receiving support from the Department for International Trade and Invest in Coventry and Warwickshire.

It chose Warwickshire as it’s close to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers, and for the availability of experienced engineers.

Triggo Mobility

Triggo Mobility based itself at MIRA Technology Park to benefit from the region’s testing facilities and autonomous vehicle expertise.

The Triggo is a manoeuvrable, fully connected, light electric vehicle designed to overcome congested traffic and inner-city parking issues: ideal for urban mobility and last-mile transport.

Rimac Automobili

Rimac Automobili designs, engineers and produces electric hypercars and high-performance electric vehicle (EV) components for the global automotive industry.

Its new R&D office is at the University of Warwick’s Wellesbourne Innovation Campus, attracted by the quality of local engineers in vehicle electrification and future mobility.
