The Federal Environment Agency has made the Semantic Network Service SNS available online for general use since 2016. SNS essentially consists of an environmental terminology in the form of a thesaurus and various web services based on this terminology. The web services can be integrated into external systems via defined web interfaces.

The provision of SNS, in particular the environmental thesaurus, is intended to facilitate the cross-system and cross-institutional use of standardized technical terms in information management, thereby improving the retrieval of and access to environmental information.
SNS is used as an integral part of environmental information systems and, with its controlled vocabulary, provides support for indexing and searching. Examples include the UBA's specialist environmental research database UFORDAT and the central portal for environmental and nature conservation information umwelt.info, the UBA data search and the Lower Saxony environmental portal NUMIS.

In order to be able to offer SNS with up-to-date content and technology and in line with user requirements, the system needs to be continuously maintained and further developed. To this end, a framework agreement (contingent to call up services) is to be concluded with an external service provider. The individual requirements are then specified and commissioned from the agreed contingent during the term of the contract.
