Short description:
The biodiversity and climate crises are closely linked. On the one hand, global warming is rapidly changing ecosystems so that organisms living in them are unable to adapt and many species are disappearing (biodiversity loss). On the other hand, the anthropogenic degradation and destruction of natural ecosystems leads to a release of the carbon bound in them and a loss of ecosystem function as CO2 sinks, which in turn exacerbates the climate crisis. The preservation, renaturation and restoration of natural ecosystems are therefore not only nature conservation but also natural climate protection.
In the transport sector, the design of compensation and offsetting areas in particular offers the opportunity to use and promote synergies between nature and natural climate protection. The potential for CO2 storage differs between different soils and between different types of biotope. The species composition and the age of individual species (mainly in the case of woody plants) also determine how much CO2 can be bound or stored. This means that selected compensation measures can be used to reduce biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas concentrations at the same time.
The aim of the research project is to localize compensation and offsetting areas in one federal state as an example, to record existing soils and biotope types on them and to determine both their relevance to climate protection and their nature conservation value. In particular, measures that promote the increase and preservation of the CO2 storage capacity of the soil are to be evaluated in terms of their effectiveness and durability. An overview of the biotope types present on the compensation and offsetting areas with their ecological value and CO2 storage capacity is to be compiled. Taking into account the existing soils, recommendations are to be drawn up on how compensation and offsetting areas can be designed in order to make the best possible use of the synergies between nature conservation and climate protection. Conflicting objectives with other nature conservation goals are to be identified.
