3624EMF124 - Research synthesis of social science risk research on electromagnetic fields of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection

Short description:
The aim of this research project is the preparation of a research synthesis of all social science (i.e. sociological, psychological, cultural, media and communication science) research projects initiated by the client in the field of risk communication with reference to electromagnetic fields (EMF). Since the beginning of the German Mobile Telecommunication Research Program (DMF) some twenty years ago, the BfS has been conducting risk communication research on EMF. However, the results of social science research are linked to the time of their origin. Their significance and validity change in parallel with socio-cultural and media changes. On the one hand, all relevant publications and, on the other, selected relevant internal works and documents are to be examined. The project should include a precise description of the increase in knowledge, accompanied by a methodological critique with reference to social science changes on the one hand and social, socio-cultural and media changes on the other, and their consequences for current BfS risk communication on EMF. In addition, research questions and hypotheses are to be generated and research fields and open questions are to be identified. After (a) reviewing the relevant state of research and here in particular the relevant BfS studies on EMF risk communication research, (b) the methodological critique of these studies and the analysis of the change in their respective socio-cultural and historical contexts follows, in order to build on this (c) to systematically summarize the respective recommendations for action of the studies by means of a contemporary, updating synthesis and then (d) to generate new research questions and hypotheses and to identify research fields and open questions.
