The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) is a joint research center of the Julius-Maximillians-Universität Würzburg and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, HZI in Braunschweig. The building site for the new HIRI building is located in the Grombühl district of Würzburg on Josef-Schneider-Strasse and represents an "island location" within the historic campus of the University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW), which is situated on the slope of the Lindleinsberg and slopes south-southeast towards the Pleichach Valley.
