Description
The aim of the study is the development and programming of a modeling tool for the determination and representation of the dispersion behavior of railway-relevant pollutants within and from the railroad body into the environmental compartments soil and water. In the model to be created, the railroad body with all its components, areas and construction types is to be reproduced in detail. Existing knowledge gaps with regard to necessary parameters, parameters and processes must be identified in advance and, if not available, determined in upstream investigations. The project results should contribute to improving the risk assessment of railway-specific emissions in the context of soil and water protection as well as accelerating and providing technical support for the granting of water law permits and environmental supervision.
Description
Rail transport is generally regarded as an environmentally friendly means of transportation, but it also produces material emissions. Possible sources of emissions are, for example, abrasion processes from operation and substances from chemical vegetation management. In addition to time-consuming and cost-intensive environmental measurements, the fate and dispersion of pollutants in the various environmental compartments can also be estimated using models. Previous models, such as Altex-1D, do not adequately represent the track system or the track bed and the processes taking place within it. Although previous studies by the DZSF have been able to significantly improve the heterogeneous data situation on the pollutant spectrum and concentration ranges as well as possible distribution paths, there is a lack of suitable modeling approaches to realistically represent the spread and transferability of the results.
