Description
The Nakusp Hot Springs were built in 1974 and have not been substantially changed since then. The current diesel boiler is at the end of its service life. This RFP is for upgrading the boiler to a liquid-to-liquid heat pump. The heat pump should use the hot springs water as its source and tie into the existing domestic hot water plumbing and the radiant floor heating. The Nakusp Hot Springs has a natural source of hot water. It flows in the building at about 150 LPM at a range of 32C – 47C depending on the point in the plumbing. There is a circulation loop of 50mm pipe from the hot springs water exit tank to the mechanical room. It currently feeds a heat exchanger that pre-warms the domestic hot water supply but there is additional capacity available. The water in this loop is approximately 32C.The main hot springs water passes within 3m of the mechanical room in an exposed pipe running along the basement ceiling. The water in the pipe is about 47C and there is some capacity to use the water for the heat pump. The maximum flow of either of these pipes is 150 LPM although there is not this amount available for heating from the hot springs source pipe as most of it enters the hot springs pools. The existing boiler and hot water tanks are shown in Schedule A. The current boiler is a Heiztechnik GmbH Wetzlar G305-7 with a maximum output of 393,000 BTU/hr. It is used in conjunction with two Allied Technologies “Super Hot” EPP-120 heat exchanger tanks to preheat the water supply.Hot water demand comes from twelve showers, five bathroom sinks, three utility sinks, and the radiant floor system inside the building. The proponent is responsible for verifying the suitability of any existing equipment and hot water demand. The ideal timeline will see the heat pump installed during the spring shut down in late April 2025 if a significant service interruption is required. An alternate proposal may be accepted if it has an equivalent energy efficiency.
