Description

Polyfluorinated and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have recently become the focus of increased public attention. They are persistent and bioaccumulative and can cause negative effects within the human body. They enter the food chain through plants.
In addition to point sources, there are diffuse sources that have led to PFAS being detected in the environment worldwide. As the ecological and human toxicological effects are still poorly understood, the precautionary principle is applied. The potential of the road sector as a possible source of PFAS in the environment is not known. The same applies to possible contamination of road surface water or soils in the vicinity of roads.
The aim of this research project is to quantify the presence of PFAS in the environment of road structures, road equipment and road traffic in Germany in order to be able to make a statement about the road as a whole as a possible diffuse source of PFAS.
The pollution of environmental media in the vicinity of roads, in particular the soil, and input loads are to be quantified. If possible, specific sources should be identified. By varying the sampling matrix, the distances from the road, the position of the sampling points in the road cross-section, the sampling depth, the types of environment and the direction of runoff and the main wind direction, information on the direction of dispersion and possible displacement of substances is to be derived. These are to be checked for plausibility by reference measurement(s).
The results will be compared and classified with the current state of knowledge regarding PFAS in soils and sources of PFAS.
These statements serve to identify possible sources of PFAS in the road sector, to determine the respective input load and to record sensitive constellations with regard to concentrations or substance shifts. This should make it easier to reduce emissions of PFAS into the environment and, if necessary, to implement measures for better environmental protection.
