Description

During the hours of darkness, fixed street lighting makes a positive contribution to traffic safety on roads, to the provision of public services and to the prevention of criminal assaults. It is therefore an elementary part of a safe and efficient road infrastructure. On the other hand, however, the constant increase in lighting, the trend towards whiter street lighting and technical progress in lighting technology (e.g. LED and laser light) have serious consequences for people, nature and the climate (CO2 emissions). The disruptive influence of lighting (light immissions) on people and nature in residential and nature conservation areas or other sensitive habitats as well as CO2 emissions from street lighting must be limited and reduced, thus increasing the environmental compatibility of street lighting. This requires new sustainable and GHG-neutral lighting concepts, such as adaptive lighting systems that take into account the dependence of usage times on the season and temperatures.
Unnecessary emissions can be avoided by lowering the lighting level in line with the traffic flow and twilight conditions depending on deliberately selected periods of use or by designing a light that moves with the traffic.
The aim of this research project is to reduce electrical energy consumption and light immissions through intelligent control of lighting systems. To this end, sensible and measurable criteria and specifications for the temporal and local adjustment of lighting are to be defined and limit values determined.
The implementation of the research results can help to reduce CO2 emissions and avoid unnecessary emissions to protect people and the environment. This makes a direct contribution to climate and immission protection.
