Description

Transport Canada is looking for a consultant/firm to review the recent research findings on Evaluating External Display Needs for Automated Vehicles: Communicating Automation Status to Other Road Users, identify information needs and challenges for human-automation interactions in traffic, conduct a technology scan to identify the most promising automation signal designs in the field, examine the compliance of automation signals with current international lighting regulations, and evaluate human comprehension and acceptance of different automation displays that can guide safe interactions between automation and other road users. A controlled experiment designed to collect human participants’ data for comprehension, acceptance, and their planned behaviors in response to the display will be conducted where designs are compared to each other and in reference to a baseline condition.
The results of this project will provide insights into the safest and most effective ways to communicate automated vehicle status to road users in a Canadian road-traffic environment. A summary and recommendations will be made for evaluation procedures. This research is also expected to contribute significantly to the development of harmonized standards and guidelines for external automation status displays.
