Baukultur competitions are valuable instruments for creating greater awareness of good building in a region. Award-winning building projects are used to recognize the respective owners and initiators for their work, which has made a decisive contribution to regional building culture. The hoped-for effect of building culture competitions is that their example should set a precedent in the region. It should encourage others to also dare to build well and sustainably. However, Baukultur should not only be understood to mean "good and sustainable building", but also the interplay of buildings to create a typical regional townscape, as well as the integration of green spaces in the town and the transition of the edge of the town into the surrounding cultural landscape. Holding Baukultur competitions in the UNESCO biosphere reserves (BR; Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve, Elbe-Brandenburg river landscape biosphere reserve; Spreewald biosphere reserve) in Brandenburg is in line with the objective of these model regions to operate sustainably and develop them further. Building culture competitions were therefore already held in 2019. The motto of the building culture competitions held in 2019 as part of the Sustainability Award of the State of Brandenburg was: "Natural. Sustainable. Building culture in Brandenburg". The aim of the competitions was to raise awareness of typical regional buildings and their characteristic details, to sensitize clients to them and to promote harmoniously integrated new building culture. Entries were accepted not only from the biosphere reserves, but also from their surroundings. Due to the success of the competitions in the three BRs and the desired continuity in the efforts to promote building culture, regional competitions are to be held again in all three BRs in 2024/2025. The competition concept, evaluation and documentation are to be accompanied by experts. Please note that the service phase under point 4.2 of the specifications is an option.
