The old building of the Konradin elementary school in Kaufbeuren is being renovated in two construction phases as part of an energy-efficient refurbishment project. The first construction phase will add 4 additional classrooms to the school. The energy measures include a façade renovation to a KfW 55 standard and an interior renovation to comply with the current regulations and requirements for sound insulation and fire protection.

The property is located in a residential area in the northern part of Kaufbeuren. In the immediate vicinity is a secondary school with a sports field to the west of the building plot. To the south, the property borders a church, otherwise access roads are located directly on the boundaries of the property.

An extension with four classrooms, two checkrooms and two archive rooms is planned, which will be placed in the inner courtyard area between the main and west buildings and attached to the west building. It is attached directly to the existing building in order to keep the envelope area as small as possible.
The two-storey building with a green flat roof will be constructed in timber and will blend into the existing ensemble of buildings thanks to its shape and location. The redensification creates a smaller inner courtyard area between the new and existing buildings, via which one of the two escape routes to be created leads from the stairwell to the outside.

In the first construction phase, some of the existing gas heating system will have to be refurbished; a switch to renewable energy will only be made in a subsequent construction phase.
