Anyone planning a journey in Germany and Europe using public transport (rail, public transport, sharing) usually only needs a central travel information service. The information on timetables, stops, delays etc. provided publicly by the transport operators, among others, is prepared there in a user-friendly way. Ticket sales are not yet at this level. Especially for cross-border connections, tickets and reservations can often only be purchased or booked via the sales channels of the respective companies. Through tickets or even tickets in different fare zones can rarely be booked at a central point. The Deutschland-Ticket makes traveling much easier. However, the problem remains for occasional and international travel.
This fragmentation makes public transport unattractive. At the same time, the solution seems obvious: Ticket sales should be networked in such a way that all tickets and reservations required for travel can be purchased in one place. This topic is by no means new; the list of failed, ongoing and planned networking projects is correspondingly long. This networking is technically challenging, but feasible in principle. What is missing are the economic incentives and legal framework conditions to actually implement networking.
The DZSF has invited tenders for a project on the technical and economic issues of networked ticket sales in 2023. Only Lot B for market research and national implementation concepts was awarded. Part of this study deals with the costs of ticket sales, in particular the additional costs that would (initially) arise as a result of networking. Lot A, which was not awarded, was to provide the technical basis for this.
